Whoever named the road runner was spot on. You only see them running up the road, down the road or across the road. I have never seen one just walking in the woods or across a pasture. And as soon as they hear a car, they say to themselves: I must run across the road to safety. Why they can’t just run into the bushes on the side they are already on is a mystery. But it works for them. You will see a lot of critters on the road squished dead, even birds sometimes. But you will never see a road runner hit by a car. They know what they are doing.
